OT: recovering a lost password for a PPT presentation

Did you try the copy / paste into a new presentation method? Ctrl-A to select all slides, paste into new workbook.

Then "view master slides" (or whatever it is called in ppt 2003), and again copy paste into the new workbook (and then delete the "old" master slides in the new workbook).

Seemed to bring transitions, images, formatting all across properly when I did it.

I've tried that, but without success. It is not possible to select anything in read-only mode.
