OT: New car in Europe

Hi all,

Is it still the case that large savings on the price of new cars can be had by buying them from European dealerships? I know that, say, five years ago, this was true, but was wondering if the new car market here has "normalised".

I don't think so. That page is just a registrar holding page. Anyone else?

We looked into all this about 2 years ago, and discovered that the way to buy a new vehicle was through a broker (just someone we found via Google IIRC!). The way this works is that the broker gives you a price, which is way below anything you'll get at any dealership via normal channels, and you buy the car from a specific franchised dealership that the broker puts you in touch with. You pay only the dealership, who provides commission to the broker, so you don't need to trust the broker at all. The deal we got was only marginally more than the total cost of buying from the continent, but without having to go to over there to fetch it - so we went with the broker.

Only hassle for us was having to travel 70-odd miles to collect the car; however I gather some will deliver to your door. Any warranty/service work is picked up by the local franchised dealership just round the corner, who didn't give us a good enough deal first time around.

Things may be different 2 years later - I haven't been keeping up.

By the way - why not post to one of the uk.rec.cars newsgroups, rather than here??

And perhaps also post a query to < uk.people.consumers > to see if there are any comments there?

Just to follow up my own post, I've just noticed there's a whole newsgroup dedicated to the topic: uk.rec.cars.imports !!
