The annoying thing is that the date of the item isn't shown as part of each search result.

They did have an experimental timeline feature where you could add view:timeline to any query, but they've had a cull of "Google Labs" bells and whistles lately ...

You can display them on a web page carrying adverts. Lots of relevant content and hence a high search engine (organic) results hit rate.

Probably not the usage expected by the authors, who after all retain all rights to such usage unless explicitly waived.
