OT: My Computer

There is probably a lower level problem here. If the PC does not at least attempt to enumerate the USB device when you plug it it, its not going to be visible at any other layer.

So the first question is do you get the usual "USB device mounted" sound on plugging it in?

If not you either have a device that is not responding correctly, or for some reason windows has got itself confused during an earlier attempt to communicate with this device an has marked it out for different treatment thereafter.

Right. Then it has to be the angle grinder.

Nope.

My Kindle works fine.

Which tells you the USB port works, but does not eliminate either of the above mentioned possibilities. However if you plug the navman into another machine and that also does not give you the device detected sound, then you know its the navman at fault.

Indeed, it wasn't recognised on SWMBO's PC either.

Sure it's the correct cable? Just because it fits doesn't necessarily mean it's the correct one ... any crumbs or dislodged contacts if you peer into the USB connector?

It came with the sat nav. I only have two such cables & the other one is white.

I'll have a look at it, but I suspect the sat nav is FUBER.

I recently replaced my sat nav because my PCs didn't recognise it. Only when I got the same problem with the new one did I start checking further - of all the USB cables I have which fit (mini-USB) only 2 worked. (I have no idea which cable came with what.) Sat navs seem extra picky.

This is probably not the case for the OP since he has tried the device in another PC but I had some software (for a Mobile phone) that replaced the low-level windows USB driver with it's own. This caused some USB devices to work and some not. Took me ages to find that one. :-(

They are constantly abused, cables pulled, vibration, hot air and/or sun heating them up, etc. it all makes the usb sockets and plugs wear. Its worse now than when you has a PSU cable and a separate USB cable, now you tend to have just one cable so it gets twice the battering. I am not convinced micro usb are suitable for satnavs.

Garmin sat navs are mini, not micro, and there are internal differences in the cables which is why some work and some don't.
