OT - more eco-bo**ocks

seems to think wind is wonderful. The Tories seem to have had an unusual attack of reality.

"In these financially straitened times, we think it is unwise to make consumers pay, through taxpayer subsidy, for inefficient and intermittent energy production that typifies onshore wind turbines,"

vs

"For Labour, shadow energy and climate change secretary Caroline Flint said: "Britain should be a world leader in wind energy. We need to put jobs, growth and reducing energy bills first, but David Cameron is failing to do this. We just get a Tory party divided amongst itself..."

Which is reality and which is a dumb knee jerk political response?

Only tine will tell.

Cheers

Welsh windbag?

I've just been watching a TV programme selected by my wife. "Escape to the Country" in which a couple of airheads decided that they want to live in the country and have an "ecological" life style.

The first house they say was heated by open fires and a Rayburn. The chinless presenter told them this was "low carbon, ecological and economical". In the grate were anthracite nuts, presumably the Rayburn ran on the same. If anyone thinks this fuel is "low carbon, ecological and economical" they need the services of a shrink. The building also had several storage radiatiors.

Then they went to see an eco-weenie who told them they could make all their own electricity and live without bills. Said eco-weenie dragged in the local planning officer who said that they (unnamed council in Somerset) advised that a 5kW generator could "service the electricity needs of three houses". That would be three dog houses presumably. Even the Italians who are extremely mean with electricity supply a minimum of

3kW per household (6kW recommended).

Said eco-weenie generated electricity by "solar PV, windmill and water wheel". The were three solar panels - largest looked to be about 80W, two smaller about 25W each. One windmill that looked to be about 150W maximum and the waterwheel. Piss-poor home made construction with a 3ft head and an overshot wheel that had the water chute in the wrong place. When questioned eco-weenie said the alternator was "from a car".

So how the jumping hell did that produce 5kW? Or indeed anything of much use to anyone.

I'm in favour of alternative energy sources where economically feasible, but this sort of shit is eco-bollocks for those who can't be arsed to think.

Oddly they turned down the one house with real eco-potential, a watermill with a working mill race and a knackered wheel. It looked large enough to produce at least 10kW.

Meanshile, I see the shit continues:

"Battersby has spent £450,000 on work to convert Tellisford Mill on the river Frome so that it can generate 60kW of power at peak output, enough for more than 50 homes."

A supply of just 1.2kW (peak) per home? Someone is taking the piss. If they said 10 homes it would be credible, 20 homes is pushing it a bit,

50? Bwhahahahahaahahahah.

They are both dumb knee jerk political responses. The Tories are just as eco mad as Labour but are being criticised over making the poor pay for wind and solar. Probably at considerable expense they have a form of eco words to justify saving money. They are still intending phenomenal numbers of land and sea based wind turbines even though they are currently saying they are inefficient and intermittent.

Never believe anything a politician says.

I do think that's unfair - but then I've sat opposite politicians who've said "I want to get re-elected so..... " or "I can think of less painful ways of committing political suicide" :)

Not very. :-)

an engineering education is a suitable alternative.

IF you actually THINK through the WHOLE scenario.

How do you know when a politician is lying?

His lips move...

How can you tell when a poltician is lying about green issues

His lips move and form the words 'sustainable' or 'renewable'..

The best bit of that site would probably be that they have the _right_ to take the water to use. EA tend to be a bit picky on that, even if you are going to put it straight back.

I wonder if the first one has the permissions in place?

All other things being OK, you can abstract 20cu.m and return 10cu.m per day without licence or payment.

Somebody with more maths than I will point out this is close to bugger all thermally or without some huge head.

At the last election I voted Conservative for the very first time in my life (I'm 69). I did so because they were the only party who seemed (albeit in a wishy-washy way) to be least gung ho about wind farms and their massive subsidies.

I also wrote to my MP twice about the new planning regime and the way it presumes "sustainable" development should be allowed planning permission on the nod. This is carte blanche to all the spongers who want the subsidies for turbines on their land. My MP is one of the 105 Conservatives who signed the letter quoted above.

I shall now write her a letter thanking her.

It's no use ranting on this newsgroup - you need to write to your MP.

Didn't Mr Appleton say the range was a bad thing eco-wise?

assuming 20cm3 in and out thats about 0.054kwH per metre of head (at 100% efficiency) so 100m head would give about 5.4 KwH if I've do the maths correctly

oops m3 or cubic metres not cm3 lol

apologies - I should have said 0.054KwH per metre of head per day or 5.4KwH for a 100m head per day- was looking at energy produced not power

Not that I recall, he was telling them that it was all Eco. [snip]

I wish I'd known that a few years back. When we went through great pain to get a licence for drinking water for a sports club...

Though as has been said that doesn't generate much power.

And now we've got:

Lib Dems arguing for tax cuts Tories looking to suspend bonuses and take away honours and Labour defending the bonuses and honours.

Is it just me, or has the world gone completely mad?

Not the world, just the politicians. Very few have any real experience of anything, outside education and politics, and it shows.
