Nelson Mandela's dead? You think they would have mentioned it.
Actually it was the same for BBC Look East. The Norfolk coast got hammered and we got Nelson. Regional news should priotise regional news.

I object to being repeatedly told that we are ALL mourning his death.
Listen to interviews with one of the chattering classes and you find that he was a world class leader. Listen to an interview from someone from one of the townships and you may find that his lasting legacy was to replace one morally corrupt regime with another morally corrupt regime.
Likely freelance. Sourced locally if possible.
Midlands Today managed to cover NM in depth as there's a school named after him in Brum that he visited. So interviews there. There's also some kind of committee set up by some bloke who met him, big interview plus rehash of decades ago. About 12 mins in total!
We had about a dozen trees down, one onto a car the guy had just got out of and a stall in the Brum German Market was blown over on top of two women. All covered in a minute. So no real storm here!
The beeb has had complaints a bout too much coverage in the news before. But we are but mere viewers, they know best..
Richard
No sooner do I state the obvious than I find a bbc.co.uk page confirming it!
The response to numerous complaints of too much coverage.....
And they did cover storm damage! You just had to stay up!!
"BBC One viewers received updates on the storm in their area during regional bulletins broadcast at 2250 and in a weather forecast at 0030, on the BBC News website and on BBC local radio stations throughout the night. We are continuing to report on the aftermath of the storm."

Very appropriate seeing "he" was a local lad there;)...
Well I sort of am. I mean he achieved far far more in terms of saving lives ultimrtely than - say - Diana, whose death was not only no surprise, but was I am afraid a blessed relief.
But without too many people being killed.
Apartheid was totally insane. Never mind the morality, it was costing a fortune to any employer.
It had to go. The question was what would be the price of it? Nelson made that far less a price than it might have been.
It could have been mau mau or Zanu-PF instead of the ANC...

It was just about as bad in the eastern region - which covers Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex, all of which were badly affected by the storm surge. Just a few minutes on the damage and all the evacuations after a huge and unnecessary amount Mandela, telling nothing that I didn't know already.
Sound recordist on news? They haven't existed for ages. "Multiskilled" camera operator and journo. Pretty much the only time there will be anybody with half a clue about "sound" will be if they are doing a live link up as comunications are so terribly difficult. That role will be done by the uplink operator.
Well, Calendar got it right.
I'll be very interested to see how much of Look North is devoted to the death, when it occurs, of the Queen. That's assuming I'm still alive at the time, which from the way I feel today is unlikely.
Bill
Unless Yorkshire has declared both independence and republicanism, she is Queen of Yorkshire.
Mandela wasn't even Town Clerk o' Tickhill
Owain
Oh you had some personal letters from him then?
There's usually just the two of them. Journo+camera man. They even edit it on a laptop and email the result back to base. Whiz about all over the place. V. stressful I should think.
Even then you are at the behest of the reporter. It amazes me how so many of them display so few skills in being able to point a microphone in the right place at the right time.
He had a garden in Barnsley
No, in fact it doesn't. Racism can only be white on black. Ask Jo Brand.
Bill
Yeah. He did a good class of ransom note...
Bill
I'm sure he could at least spell his own name correctly.
I regard ending the cold war to be a far more significant achievement than avoiding a civil war in South Africa.
Did Diana do that? Wow!
