OT(?): Impressive Farnell delivery time

Ordered £20 worth of components the other evening at 7:30pm and they arri ved the following morning at 10:30am... That was the free delivery option t oo!

When the Farnell box arrived I actually thought it must've been something e lse other than last night's order!

You are confusing Farnell with the courier

I had two deliveries from Farnell today as it happens

5 items arrived at 11am in a padded envelope, one arrived in a box sometime in the afternoon, and, more importantly two items didn't because they were not in stock

Ordered the lads birthday present from the online Lego Shop at midday. The "dispatched" email is timed at 1646. It arrived here at 1140 next day. This came from Brussels, via East Midlands and Manchester.

Wasn't free though...

Not at all. Any delivery chain is only as good as its weakest link and that starts at the supplier. For Farnell to get my goods out 'after hours' by m any retailers definition (obviously not theirs) and to the courier for deli very 12 hours later is worth a thumbs up from me.

It is a refreshing change to the all-too-often case where a retailer can ta ke several days to despatch an item even before the courier can do their bi t to add further delay!

Admittedly mine only went from Yorkshire to Leeds so that's impressive and certainly shows it can be done. It also raises questions as to why it can't be the norm too.

That is about the level of service that Unipart reckon to do every day. ( I have nothing to do with them but once went round their distribution centre in Oxford)

It's what 1st Class post does... Though with a cut off time of 1600 ish here when the last collection is from the "Letters Only" box just down the road. It's a bit later for packages taken to the local PO.

I know people knock the postal system but we find it works very well and quickly, something catching the last post in Penzance will be dropping through our letter box around 1000 the next day.

It's a long time since we bought any lego from there but it always took ages to arrive. And I don't think it was free either.

Check the tracking. Most Farnell UK packages via UPS are routed from Leeds to Preston - even if the destination address is next door to their Leeds distribution depot.

7pm is the cutoff for the Belgian distribution centre for next day delivery to the UK 8pm cutoff for the UK distribution centre 8am deliveries using standard delivery are not unusual

That's the sort of delivery I have come to expect from Farnell and RS - they obviously have a late special collection, and I live in London.

Ordered up an IC off Ebay from a supplier in Morden - only a few miles away. Posted was stated as second class RM and reasonable. Was dispatched on a Monday (said Ebay) and arrived here Tuesday - over a week later. Supplier said that was normal for 'commercial' RM second class post. Sadly the pre-paid address label had no posting date etc from RM, so I've no idea when it was actually posted.

Too many are quick to damn the PO but I doubt any privately run outfit will stick to the same pricing and service levels for very long.

Farnell, RS, Rapid, et. al. are not "retailers" by the normal definition. This kind of service is essential for many of their customers.

it is nice, but probably down to the vast volumes of post they have allowing a late collection.

I ordered up a boiler part from a big supplier, and that took a day longer to arrive than the norm from RS etc. In this weather it's kinda essential too. ;-) They did offer a quicker delivery, but that was extremely expensive.

They could be telling the truth. When I had a temp job in a RM mail centre, there was a 'product' they did for commercial bulk senders that sat around in cages for days until they absolutely had to forward it for delivery. (At a cheaper rate).
