Always seems that way and with a Lancashire born and bred Grandfather I'm fairly neutral on the North South divide. With many Northerners defining the "South" as anywhere they don't like in the general direction of Lands End that encompasses a lot of regions of England that has differences just as great between them as to the Northern counties. And they seem really ignorant on industries that have come and gone in much of them. Cornish Tin mining * China Clay , Copper,Zinc ,Arsenic Mines in Devon, Iron Ore and Coal in Somerset, Rock quarrying and Oil extraction in Dorset ,Sand pits and quarries in all the counties around London for brickmaking , Chalk pits as well. Coal mining in Kent are just a few examples of resources extracted from the ground in areas which Northerners consider the South and ,No Pun intended I have only scratched the surface.

• Cornish mining expertise was developing well probably before a Northerner was told which end of a pick was the handle. Not for nothing did the ethos become so strong that despite hardly any mines left one of the foremost mining schools in the world still is in the County.
