OT Heights

As a retired skydiver who doesn't much like ladders and heights, 1000' is when you stop worrying and start feeling comfortable because the ground is not an immediate threat. As with all flying, height is safety.

I am wondering who will be the first to base jump it.

My son is T1 and wears a very visble bracelet. But he does tend to sense impending hypos and hasn't so far actually collapsed.

Given the option, Jaffa cakes are the classic hypo treatment!

A can of full-fat Coke (Or any non-diet fizzy soft drink) works faster.

As a diabetic, I carry one or some glucose tablets in the car at all times.

Yeah, I had no idea what it was, thought someone had spiked a drink, but my wife's a cook and worked out what I'd eaten and how I'd been working that day, put 2+2 together correctly.

Least ways it's the only time I've done it and I now have back-up stuff everywhere. Down to average 6.9 blood sugar now, 1 tablet a day and good dietary control means I seem to be getting it under control quite well.

At the time it was absolutely scary as a scary thing though .. ;)

does he get back to a sitting position? That would be one risky maneuver.

Just coal mines or anything underground?

I quoted for a job in the Blue John Carvern. Free entry when pricing a job up.

Oh, I know. But the jelly in the Jaffa cake is nearly as fast, and there is also back-up longer acting carbohydrate.

He always carries dextrose, and Coke etc. is usually available.

Maybe. But I am not going to start shopping for my customers:-)

But I did let the diabetic bloke and his wife stop at mine for a week for free after they had a house fire.

Some customers are worth it. They are now good friends and not customers.

The good thing about Coke is that it doesn't go stale, and the bad thing about Jaffa cakes is that they're too easy to snack on when I'm not having a hypo. :-/

Deep underground and tightly confined spaces make me uncomfortable. IIRC the average seam height in a British coal mine is 3 ft. No problems going around the Wieliczka Salt Mine, near Krakow, with its underground cathedral, nor the many limestone caverns I have visited.

I would hope so too.

And the Wieliczka Salt Mine had a rodent problem when I was there.

Even if I found that being at that height in such an exposed position was not too worrying I still could not work there. Would get fed up with having to keep going down and up and look for the last specialised fastener that would almost certainly do a Pingfuckit on me.

Daytime ones are ok. Can feel a bit pissed, or start sweating copiously. I think I might have frozen once or twice - never collapsed.

Nighttime while asleep is a different matter - the fit and tongue biting are not recommended.

Since I'm old and allowed to do things for myself, I get chocolate biscuits or chocolate or other tasty things for hypos.

Rumours are kids can learn about this and give themselves a bit too much insulin to get a biscuit they wouldn't normally do. That's why the diabetes books all say boring things like glucose tablets or lucozade.
