There can, in theory, be up to 45 different companies in one country quite legitimately using the same word or initials as a trade mark. That is the number of different categories of mark and having a mark in one category does not prevent someone else having a mark in a different one. It also depends where the mark is registered, nationally or internationally, as many marks are only registered in one country or one region (e.g. the EU).

Does seem odd does it not. Mind you there are other terms with multiple meanings as I found out when I searched for CBT, Cognotive Behavioural Therapy.

Unless it's Apples ;-)
The best one is AA, alcoholics anonymous and the automobile association .
And American Airlines, who have managed to nab aa.com. Wonder if they got in early and if not how much they paid for it?
Could be some confusion over ISO standards, electrical goods, and conformity though.
Answer to the first part of your question is at
"aquired it's domain". Grrr.
