OT Do Relate have a hotline to Mars?

You know as some point she will start an argument - probably just after she tries to park the spaceship and she scrapes the bumber down Phobos or Deimos.

And I have just spotted the second problem "The group still has to raise funding for their mission".

One issue is the light travel time. You could not have a conversation it would be more like sending very fast postal letters back and forth. Not looked at this in detail. Are they proposing to just orbit then, and how long should they stay, if its more than a fleeting visit it would need more than 2 years. If I were going to do this I'd send ahead of time a ferry vehicle and some kind of living quarters with bio sustainable systems. As for your cheap pun, I'd hope that any problems with parking could be sorted out in the simulator! Thing is where is the dosh coming from. Brian

It took you that far to see a problem ;)

"The mission will be a straightforward flight to the Red Planet and return without landing."

Which does rather raise the question "What's the point ?".

Yep. I reckon it will be a *very* long time before anyone works out how to land a crew AND get it back. Going all that way to drop into another gravity well seems monumentally pointless when there's so much more that could be done in the asteroid belt.

The idea floated a while back (didn't Neil Armstrong back it ?) that people might make a one-way trip to Mars had more sense.

What was the point of Apollo 7, 8, 9, and 10? Preparing for 11.

And did 12 prepare for 13? :-)

That's not a real problem though, just use kickstarter, email celebrates the type with mnore money than sense, plenty offf them, say you'll but their name on something and drop it off at Mars and they;ll be listed as the first names to land on Mars.

yes, forgetting about muscle fatugue and the amount of radiation could cause serious problems with living tuissue exposed for 1-2 years minium.

Prepare for a 'proper' Mars mission we did the same with Apollo missions and even with early Satellite didn;t stay up very long or were very useful... It's mainly to test the technology and push the limits...

The mission isn't a great deal longer than the current record.

The current record is 437 days just orbiting the earth and protected by our magnetic shield. I think a couple of years journey to Mars will have far m ore problems that will need over coming.

That's kind of the point of looking for volunteers, then doing it. If after all that time they aren't fit enough to walk around (and they may well not be) this will be an interesting challenge for the first people who _do_ land.

Cheap puns are what I do.

I would suggest John McCarthy and Brian Keenan go to Mars as they are used to living in similar conditions. Maybe use Terry Waite as the back up crew should one of them catch for measles just before lift off.
