But some of the train companies (especially if you choose the one whose trains you'll mainly be using) may have a slight discount or their own "cheapest fare finder" to take the grunt work out of it if you are very flexible about when you travel [but that's only for fixed-train tickets which I think the OP was leaning away from].
Looks as though my split ticketing suggestion isn't going to provide a saving, so have you checked out buying singles? Counter-intuitive, but it sometimes works.
