OT bifocals/varifocals?

My XYL "swears by them" and I've never noticed her having to "scan the page". She uses them for close up sewing (cross-stitch etc), reading, PC work and driving. She also wears contact lenses and is thinking about those in varifocal (yes, you can get them).

I suspect one aspect in the style of frame and size of lens- that must influence the size of the zones.

Boots are/were doing a money-back 10 day trial for varifocals I couldn't get on with them, so ended up buying two pairs @ £15 each off the net.

On the other hand, I adjusted to varifocals immediately; when the firm subsequently gave me a set of safety glasses as bifocals to the same prescription I found them absolutely useless (tripping over stuff, etc). Some people (like me) adjust easily to new glasses, but my wife often goes back for lens changes. As others have said, a decent firm should change without argument. Anyone know the markup on lenses and frames offhand? I bet it is substantial.

Not as much as it was.

I like to have "react-o-lights" or the equivalent.

First time I bought these (1977 or so), they were £120 or so a pair (with a "student discount").

Last time I bought them, about a year back, they were about £150 a pair, and that wasn't from one of the "cheapie" places. For that £150 I got a "free" second pair normal (clear) lenses.

Judging by some low Internet prices, it must be. My wife's uncle makes glasses for opticians, and what we pay him is peanuts compared to High Street opticians.

It's worth looking at

've had several pairs from them at 25 quid a time! Not the ones I wear most of the time, but good spare pairs.

Well you get different areas depending on the depth of the frame. It probably varies with different lens makes too. Who is your optician so he can be avoided?

True I have large frames, as recommended for exactly that reason.

True, AFAIK the market is complex.
