6 bed, well insulated, about 2000 a year oil, and 1500 a year electric.

With gas, less computer kit and TVs and half the size, you should be down to less than half that in a modern build.

I'd say the average family house would be about a grand to heat and power.

Four-bed detached 20 years old, gas/electricity from British Gas, price fixed until 2010 - £800 total last year.

4/5 beds, well insulated. 250m^2.

~£1500/year or £125/month combined gas/electricity with E.On (prior to recent increases) using their Intenet only tariff.

Gas element is about 1/3 of the total.

That seems very very cheap indeed.

Similar to D - c =A3120 per month on direct debit, 1905 4 / 5 bed house with mostly single glazing and single skin brickwork.

We do get cold from time to time though......

That's about 76kWh Gas on average per day, and about 13kWh Electricity per day.

Assuming you're heating by gas how do you manage to use so much electricity? My proportion is about 4:1 gas to electricity, cost wise. Or rather was before the recent steep rises.

I have wondered that myself. Electricity usage used to be 10k units per year.

Today every lamp that can be low energy now is but....

Cooking is all electric. 4 children = vast amounts of laundry and dishwashing + lights carelessly left on. 6 PC's in the house probably contributes too!

The ratio is right though. I just double checked.

Right. My cooking is mainly gas with only the ovens etc electric. And I never use a tumble drier.

I got very anorakky last night to double check my guesstimates.

Accurate ratio is 38/62. Evidence here:

a bit "lumpy" because of variable reading dates, and also weather I guess. Price increase in last Q is obvious.

What really alarms me is upward trend in electricity usage. I genuinely thought it was on the way down. That's my problem......

Either the world is getting darker. or you are spending more time at home. or that windmill, solar panel and CFL bulbs are a total con.

Or all three.

Perhaps having only one occupant helps? The house is double glazed and I've used low energy light bulbs for years. It's too soon to judge the financial effect of the loft insllation top-up that was installed in the spring.

I'm in the same position, and pay about the same amount (£58 pm at the moment, up from £46 a few months ago). I know I can see a definite movement in electric usage by being more carefull with standby etc, I put in usage monthly on line so I can get a track of usage , and have just completed a year as below:

Bill period Number of days Elec Daily Gas Total Average Total Daily Average

11/10/08 - 10/11/08 31 276 9 1011 33 12/09/08 - 10/10/08 29 265 9 377 13 13/08/08 - 11/09/08 30 243 8 126 4 13/07/08 - 12/08/08 31 202 7 95 3 12/06/08 - 12/07/08 31 232 7 125 4 13/05/08 - 11/06/08 30 241 8 313 10 12/04/08 - 12/05/08 31 311 10 563 18 13/03/08 - 11/04/08 30 379 13 1191 40 14/02/08 - 12/03/08 28 372 13 1157 41 12/01/08 - 13/02/08 33 406 12 1338 41 14/12/07 - 11/01/08 29 350 12 1528 53 12/11/07 - 13/12/07 32 486 15 1587 50

I need to see exactly the same periods again to get a better comparison of how much trying to save energy has achieved..
