OT Anyone else had the Trick or Treaters yet?

It has already taken over! Santa Claus and various Demons now cohabit all the garden centres from September onwards together with the serried ranks of evil looking Lindt chocolate Bunnies and Reindeer.

It is good for gardeners as you can get tremendous bargains as they want to totally clear all the shelves for the "Holiday" ripoff season.

Whilst I (partially) agree, Halloween is a Celtic tradition that was taken to the USA by Scottish & Irish immigrants.

Not that it bothers us. No-one is going to schlep down 1/4 mile of unsurfaced, unlit farm track to bother 2 houses at the end of it, especially given that one of them (ours) has a locked gate. (We started locking it after a certain amount of fly tipping and petty theft.) In 20 years, I think we've had about

3 or 4 unsolicited callers.

But the tradition didn't include the commercialised nonsense we endure now.

Last year I nipped to the local shop and there were 3 kids playing chicken by jumping into the road and then pretending to run in front of you and to try to make you swerve. I thought "on the way back from the shops if they do that again I'll scare the shit out of them by swerving towards them and not away from them and then swevre back away from them at the last second". Sure enough on the way back they did the same thing, I swerved towards them. One decided to jump back on the pavement, one stood still and the one that decided to run across the road went straight over my bonnet. I was lucky that day, there was no damage to the van.

They will become your apprentices in the future and take it out of you when you're an old man.
