OT a bit: Sony VAIO

I could have bought a Samsung laptop, but there was a special deal on the HP.

I doubt it to the extent I mean. I said "worst purchases". Overall Sony go at the market with whizzy, shiny and new; properly cutting edge stuff with a wow factor. All well and good but: their reliability is not great; products are replaced or retired quickly giving poor support or no chance to get a replacement if it goes bang; their prices are out of skew with the competition; and the company has been caught out twice (if memory serves) for unethical practices.

The pricing is the kicker. They tout themselves (and are indeed viewed) as being a premium product. If they want to charge more, then fair enough, but anyone who believs they're getting a better product by buying Sony deserves to be laughed at. Bit like Jaguar of a few years ago. Snotty dealers and top-whack prices for really rather poor engineering (and I say that as one who likes Jag!)

If your experience is such that the differences between XP and 7 bother you, I would leave well alone.

These days I think that Sony are trading on their past reputation and self publicity. I've not been impressed with the two Sony items that I've owned in the last half dozen years.

Sony will survive for a few more years with people buying on brand loyalty. They will learn.

Ditto my Sony minidisc deck.

I think the OP was really referring to the software on his machine - not the machine itself.
