OT a bit. Planning question

Before I contact the council tomorrow, does anyone know what planning category would apply to a recording studio/ rehearsal room converted from an existing light industrial workshop? Would I need a change of use?

I assume that some good soundproofing would be required, as the nearest house is about 20 feet away. ;-)

SFAIK, a commercial studio is Class B1, the same as most light industrial units. However, an integral part of the B1 classification is that the activities can be carried on within a residential area 'without detriment to the amenity of that area by reason of noise, vibration, ...', so the soundproofing would be essential.

I'm planning a proper isolated "Room within a room" and some decent sound proofing in the ventilation, as well as maybe a "lighthouse" style volume related power cut off as used in some nightclubs. I daresay some hours restrictions will be imposed as well.

AFAIK that is still the same usage. That is a place where people come and go but don't sleep, and may make noise.

Very much so. Build a blockwork or congrete structure inside and mount on something a little bit flexible and fill the gap to the outer wall with sand.

heavy double or triple doors of similar construction and airtight seals. Ditto windows. Arrange ventilation to be forced and going straight upwards so any sound goes up not sideways.

The planning dept may have "surgeries" where you can go along and have a free chat about what you want to do. They have them once a week round here.

I'll be phoning the duty planning officer and visiting the site tomorrow.
