Old Philips Washing Machine Electrics

Both wash and drain motors have gradually slowed and stopped in an old Philips AWB091BR circa 1990-93. Searching on the net for the model number I keep getting Whirlpool washing maching parts. Are these the same parts as Philips for that period ?

As it's probably not worth repairing unless its something DIY simple and I've got quite a few bits of test gear, I took off the top and expected to find a PCB with thyristors etc. as the problem is common to both motors but nothing like like that is visible. Will there be a PCB further down in the machine below the drum. There's a bunch of about a dozen wires disappearing down there. The main motor is variable speed to 1000 rpm so there must be some form of electronic control. Would it be hidden in the mechanical wash selection switch at the top.

thanks

That makes sense, Philips and Whirlpool had linkage then, don't know about the relationship is now.

I have one of a similar vintage, not your model, and it has a small, high powered dc motor fed from an electronics box located low down on the rhs. It still had a mechanical timer/controller & I'd be surprised if they had any electronics hidden in there. I haven't had to do much to it but got a tip from a guy who replaced the brushes on it under 'lifetime' warranty. In good working order, my model (AWB039) will let the drum turn freely in the clockwise direction but will oppose turning in the anti-c/w direction - something to do with the motor, controller and probably shorted turn damping. If the brushes are bushed (or p'haps the controller) then it will turn freely in both directions. This may or may not apply on yours but poss if yours is marked as a dc motor. Brushes are easy to inspect and replace.

Thanks, it looks like it will all have to be deconstructed a bit further, which is what I didn't want to do as it will fill up the kitchen with parts and the telly which normally shakes about on the top will have to be moved. Both motors have gone off, drum and pump, so the problem is likely to be a common problem in the controller box.

Whirlpool (US?) who are crap, bought the Philips white goods brand name. Since then, avoid. Buy German e.g. Bosch .. you know it makes sense :-)
