Oil tank replacement

I need to have my oil storage tank replaced. I've got one quote but I'm having trouble finding another supplier so as to check the price is "reasonable". Has anyone had a tank replacement recently and would be willing to tell me roughly what they paid? I'm looking at a

1200ish litre tank, non-bunded.

Thanks, Calvin

Not sure non bunded is allowed, BCO wise. Ask ridgeons. IIRC that should be around 450 quid or so.

Part J only requires domestic oil tanks to be bunded where there is a raised pollution risk e.g. >2500 L, or near drains/manholes/wells/ waterways - or there's hard surface between the two or the tank overflow can't be seen form the delivery tanker - etc (the last is my situation).

Plumb Center list 1250 L =A3300-400 single skin, =A3800-850 bunded (all ex- vat).

Given what a disaster a tank leak would be (clip it with a car, tree falls on it etc - or just a slow, long-term, unnoticed leak) - I'd consider bunded as money well spent anyway. Might also be worth checking household insurance would pay for clean-ups afterwards.

Happened to some neighbours of ours... bad smell of diesel in the house (which they'd almost got used to, although visitors noticed it) to find that the tank or a pipe had leaked under all the ground floor floors and they were living above a mini oil lake.

They had to move out for 18 months while all the floors were taken up, the concrete relaid, as the oil had soaked into it, and the house underpinned while they investigated where it had gone. This was a slow leak that had probably been happening over several years.

And they had the chance to put in underfloor heating ;)

They could easily have had open-flame underfloor heating.

Long time since I looked, but I thought the HETAS rules were very strict about oil pipe routings to ensure leaks from pipes and fittings are readily apparent.

Thanks NP and dom for your replies. I am in East Anglia, Cambridge area to be precise.

On re-reading my post I see that I didn't make it clear that this isn't going to be a DIY job (sadly). Oil tanks are covered by Building Regs so technically I'd need to apply for Building Control. Even if one were to ignore that rule the practicalities are off putting, the tank is full of oil so I'd need to store about a tonne of oil while I worked. The old tank is made of steel so it probably weighs a fair bit. The old tank will need to be disposed of properly. Not really something I want to take on.

I've been quoted =A3785+VAT for a 1300 litre tank, fully fitted with the oil transfered and the old tank taken away (fortunately I don't need bunded). From the prices you've indicated for a raw tank it looks like I'm paying around =A3400 to =A3500 for the service. What I'd really like to know is whether this is "reasonable" in the sense of could I get it significantly cheaper if I shop around a bit.

The only time I had an oil tank replaced was because, when almost empty, it blew over in some strong winds. Mind you, even empty, the tank was

*very* heavy.

My house insurance policy covered the cost. Yours?

Sadly its a very old tank which has simply reached the end of its life. Not an insurance job unfortunately.

I doubt it.

Its probably 2-3 days for one bloke realistically.

You have to empty the original tank into something.

Then you have to cut it up and pack it ready for the scrap metal man and take it away.

Then you have to build new supports for the new one, and get it on, and connect it up. Always a hateful business with 10mm pipes.

Then you have to refill it and possibly bleed the pipework ..

..and maybe come back and fix the inevitable leaks that the stupid 10mm copper pipework will have.

I the man who is quoting you actually does all that, its worth every penny I'd say.
