O/T: Gas cooker purchase

Generally, what's the best brand of gas cooker these days?

Looking for something basic, £200-£500, with no fancy features. Should be robust and built to last.

The one that is coming out was a Cannon, and has given 30 years of service with no problems. Are Cannon still well made or would something else be better?

Any suggestions?

Keep the Cannon.

The Cannon is getting to the end of it's life unfortunately. The electric ignition has failed and the internal self cleaning panels are starting to rust. Unfortunaltely spares are no longer available,

Do we buy another Cannon or replace it with something else?

Oh, sorry, I got the impression that it was still working well: "(it) has given 30 years of service with no problems".

Sorry, no idea. I was fed up of my 11 year old something, Spouse wanted a fancy range type to replace it. We got one, it works very well and the build is good, I feel. But it's a 90cm one and cost almost £1,000. Then he wanted an extractor hood, which a son bought. Luckily they installed both or it would have been even more expensive.

I do almost all the cooking by the way ... and I do like the dual fuel facility. The grill is excellent too and I like the slow oven. I'm pleased with the thing but don't know how long it will last.

If it lasts us out it will be great. I'm not sure if parts are available :-(

Well, it still cooks but over the past year or so various bits have started to fail. If we could still get the parts for it we'd probably do a complete overhaul and carry on using it.

What worried me about buying a new one is that they are now owned by Merloni...

Initially we bought a Stoves which was so badly damaged (it was brand new) the installer refused to connect it and it had to go straight back. We got a refund (along with a week's free meals as we had nothing to cook on as the old electric oven had gone to the tip) and replaced it with a Cannon. There was a fault with the thermostat during the warranty period but Cannon could not have been more helpful in fixing it in.
