If you haven't insured for the last 2 years or more, you have to start afresh and any past no claims years are not valid, sadly.

Agreed. Be prepared for a lot of asking around, you might well find an accommodating company, but it might take some searching.

Have you bought the car yet? Might be worth investigating the deals with inclusive insurance through the dealer. They might waive any "issues" with the insurers rather than lose the sale?

I'm not sure it will be a problem. I changed from company to private car insurance, and, being able to prove my expired no claims, most companies offered a huge 'introductory' discount. Similarly, I switched from specialist 'classic car' insurance to ordinary insurance and again was offered substantial discounts, even though I had no formal ongoing no claims discount.

Best advice is phone a few companies, explain the position and ask what they offer.

Have you driven any car on anyone else's insurance in the past 2 years?

A broker might be knowledgeable on who might give you credit for the NCB rather than dealing direct with countless phone calls.

It may depend on how you defining "a couple of years".

If you had earned a no-claim bonus on a previous policy, many companies will honour this for two years - but no more. So, if it's slightly less than 2 years since your previous policy expired, you may be ok. If it's several years - forget it!

It won't effect it, it might affect it though.

The unusual effect is your newsreader and its weird way of quoting something.

Might not be relevant to you, but if you have a partner with a car, some companies will transfer your partners NCB to you as well if you insure another car with them.

We this last year with Esure, as I'd ended the named driver on her insurance for a number of years. But AFAICR this wasn't a requirement for the insurance, I just had to have been a driving for as many years as the NCB. The credited me with her full 10+years , whatever it is NCB, which I was able to use when I moved to a different insurer this year

The policy wasn't really anymore expensive.
