That storage pond is quite large, it'd make a nice swimming pool or waterboarding centre for Islamic State members.

How come the Beeb even printed it? Doesn't fit with their 'nuclear is evil, green is good' bigotry

Sadly unless they dive down 2 meters plus, it wont do them any harm at all..

plenty of people have swum in those pools back in the day..

Mixed oxide fuel is pretty much a no-brainer.

Not really true to suggest, as the BEEB does here, that fast reactors are the only option.

At least it is nice to see images of some of the more modern parts of Sellafield.

You dont expect the nations no 1 most trusted organisation to actually research stuff. employ people with science degrees or get its facts right do you?

That wouldn't do anything, you would need to do scuba diving to get a dose big enough to do anything.

Many years ago, I had a colleague who dropped a watch into a spent fuel flask handling pond. The next day, he brought a fishing rod in to work and managed to retrieve it. It's the same pond where a routine survey found modest amounts of radioctive contamination spread around neighbouring corridors. This was subsequently traced to a local fox.

Who said I wasn't gonna have them held at a depth of 5 metres for a while.

BBC...facts...does not compute!

Sellafield had to bring in pest control to shoot the pigeons in another one of their waste ponds. They were dropping radioactive shit all over the area.

There was a cull of 150 pigeons but no mention of any level of contamination, just lots of innuendo. Perhaps the pigeons had consumed an extra portion of bananas otherwise it all sounded like a storm in a teacup?

The initial cull was 150 pigeons but it's been an ongoing process since the late 90s and will probably continue untill they clear the open air ponds. The pigeons were radioactive enough for MAFF to issue a ban on eating pigeons from within 10 miles.

Could be the coming official line is going to be anti-nuclear. It finally dawned on them what a crap, dangerous and expensive technology it is.

Interesting. Yet another nuclear U-turn in the offing? I wonder where/if the costs of all this are factored in. Probably not at all. Just hidden.

Headless chicken syndrome springs to mind. They are just piling up all sorts of nuclear shit. No idea what to do with it at reasonable cost. Leaving it for future generations to solve/sort out.

The open air pool always was a dreadful sight, I used to visit a guy in the 1980s who had an office overlooking it.

And you know this, how?
