No hot water - help required please

The heating system in the house has been working OK for about 9 years. Recently I have been getting large quantities of air in the radiators, I need to bleed every couple of days. Now the hot water to the taps has gone completlety, it just runs cold. The radiators are still OK apart from the need to bleed regularily. I replaced the hot water circuit pump just in case but it made no difference.

One thing I have noticed is that when I turn off the hot water circuit pump, water falls back down the pipe to the pump, like its has been compressing air in the pipes. Yet no air comes out of the bleed at the hot water cylinder.

So I drained the system and filled it from the bottom bleeding air everywhere I could, things are no worse but they are no better either. My heating layout does'nt look like the typical ones (see link below) I see described here and elsewhere, i.e. no vent over F&E cistern. In addition the F&E feed into the system seems to be made on the return at the hot water cylinder upstairs.

As I say I am completely stuck, is this some sort of pumping over scenario. If anyone can help before I call a plumber I would be very greateful.

I'm not entirely convinced that your system is safe. It appears to have no conventional vent, yet the boiler appears to be an old gravity model upgraded to independent pump circulation, which is unlikely to have the requisite safety modifications to support ventless operation. What is the make and model of boiler?

The boiler is a Grant Euroflame oil fired. The paperwork says it is suitable for pumped or gravity primary systems. I live in a large development and all my neighbours have the same system. I have been in the house from new and no mods have been done to the system . Peter
