new fire surround with cast iron fascia

Was thinking of a stove, but for various reasons decided to keep the open f ire. It is a Baxi Burnall fireplace with a 1930s tiled fire surround that is jus t about OK, but really does need to be changed to fit in with the redecorat ion. The plan is to keep the fire block but fit a granite hearth (3 section s for solid fuel), a 54" timber surround and a cast iron fascia with standa rd 16" x 22" opening. A stardard-ish dimension inside timber the timber sur rounds seems to be about 36" (gotta love all this imperial !), and often th e cast iron fascias are 37" or 38".

If the cast iron fascia cannot fit inside the surround, the options are:

  1. Put a rebate in the surround to take the fascia edges
  2. Trim the fascia to fit (risk of wrecking the fascia with angle grinder ! )
  3. Sink the fascia into the wall (this might happen anyway due to the plast er thickess but no idea until the old fireplace surround is removed)
  4. Get the fascia and surround from the same place and let them sort it out

Anyone done similar and know how things usually fit together ?

Cheers, Simon.

Well it seems like they generally have a rebate to take the back panel / fa scia.
