New Build Cost

Other than costing everything out in detail, are there any quick ways to come up with approx cost of materials only for a new build? It will or would be a large house, built mostly to low cost standards.

In general I'd say about a third of the typical 60-100 quid a square foot floor area.

The rest being (skilled? ) labour.

BUT how far do you go?. I bought the MATERIAL for a staircase for about

700 quid..the cost of a 'ready to erect' one would have been around 3500.

Ad of course I could have bought a couple of oak and birch trees for even less...

Ultimately all materials are 'free' and their cost is all labour costs at some level.

Dig some free coal, free limestone and free clay and build a kiln out of free iron ore and coal..and you have free cement.

multiply costs by some suitable index for building materials since publication last year.

The book is around £15 and is quite useful anyway.

Thanks everyone for the input on this. I've got a pile of things to go through now, see if one does the job.
