New boiler regs?

There have been some ads on Real Radio the past week for one of the heating places where they've started pushing condensing boilers as some new thing, not caught the gist of it yet.

Is it just a gimmick or are there some moves to make all new boilers condensing?

Yes from about this week. All new boilers have to be minimum of 86% efficient which is only condensers at the mo'. Condensers have been around for about 30 years on the Continent and about 15 years in the UK.

As of the 1st. April, a qualified yes.

In most cases, it will be a requirement to install a condensing model.

There is an exception procedure for cases where it is not practicable to install one due to siting issues etc. This is based on a points system covering several factors but it is quite hard to reach the number of points for exemption. Essentially the fitter can do a survey and issue a declaration notice if the conditions are met.

Details are on the ODPM web site in the Building Regulations area.

For almost all cases, especially the commonplace wall mounted boiler in the kitchen, condensing boilers will be mandatory by virtue of a raised efficiency limit which is impossible for non condensing models to meet.

OIl boilers (which usually have an efficiency of 85%) have an exception until 2007.
