New boiler £108

While shopping for a new boiler, I kept seeing these things...

What's the deal with them? I'm guessing they take in room air, so not room sealed, lack any exhaust gas sensing or control, and have poor efficiency. And only the front cover is ss. But I'm only guessing.

No doubt Thomas Cook will be buying them in bulk

Looks like some sort of fanned non-room-sealed flue.

The open flued ones (commonly called gysers) were made illegal in the UK, as they were killing around 40 people a year IIRC, mainly in the rented sector where they often went unmaintained. I don't know what the wording of the legislation is, but it probably bans non-room-sealed ones.

That brings back memories of Grans bathroom, usually cold so the hot water from the roaring Geyser created enough steam and condensation that you were hard pushed to see across the room ,and it was only 7ft wide. The Geyser was made by Ascot which I didn't realise till I looked them up a few minutes ago also started by selling the Junkers ones and ironically ended up with a company who supplied British planes with Gun turrets and other parts.

It was also ironical that Grans house had a fully plumbed hot water system when it was built around 1890 the pipes and bath taps still being in situ. The system fell out of use circa 1939 as unlike the people she bought the house off she couldn't afford a servant to stoke the boiler in the cellar.
