New 13A plug

Elegant idea - but I would not trust it to handle 13A through whatever rotary mechanism they have for the pins.

But if it could be a new standard, maybe BS1363-1 with a different sized fuse, only available upto maybe 3A, It would be a superb solution to the mess that is behind most people's TVs, hifis, computers etc.

five or more years old ... I'm sure it was mentioned here, but seems to have gone nowhere slowly

I thought I'd seen it quite a while ago.

The original concept was 2009, and it's in been in production since 2012

- but not as a wire-on plug, or even with an IEC or figure 8 on t'other end, let alone any proprietary power-brick connector. Nope, just as a USB adapter.

Oops, forgot the link to the actual site.

It's nice, but there's a simpler cheaper solution. Also I notice it doesn't look compliant, since the LN pins can be swung out without putting the touch protection plates down.

That's why the new one has the wings opening the other way and enclosing the pins when closed, stops you from making the multiway plug though.

Here's another - just for USB stuff, though.

Well you need the matchsticks to hold them in, and with the drop in people using cigarettes and the popularity of butane lighters matchsticks are no longer common.

Maybe the standard 13A plug can be improved, but to me they aren't a great problem. The biggest problem is the damn wall wart power supplies which vary in size and shape, and can't seem to make up their mind where the lead should come from - the earth pin end or the other end.

My son has a black one like that, which came with one of his zillions of devices.

Talking plugs, I had a rather grubby shaver adaptor sitting in the bathroom, so I took the top off, removed the fuse and put both halves through the dishwasher. Came up like new.

I have a plug here that can take four little plugs into the end where the cable would be. Its quite old and not fused of course on individual plugs, but you would be hard pressed to get a shock from it. There seem to have been a number of such things over the years, all supposed to be THE solution and all have vanished in favour of the naff socket bar extension where contact is only made sort of when a plug is in the hole. They don't fit but cut into 1" lengths are fuse replacements.

Are they (the plugs) fused though? Maybe that's the red dot on the back.

No, the multiple adapter was around in the original 2009 video

Yes that's a slide-in fuse, there was another rendered animation of them, which I *thought* showed the rotating L/N pins would short against the internal connections, but I can't see that one now, so maybe it was just a simplified animation, if they've actually produced the USB charger now, it must be possible.

Only if you're happy changing the fitted plug. And for this use, something like IEC ditribution blocks are already available and much smaller than 13 amp. Indeed there was one such system sold for just this use which used a variation of the IEC connector. It had printed labels which fitted a window on the plug to identify each item. I rather liked them - but they ceased being available, so obviously not enough demand.

Would it have to have shuttered outlets? Maybe they couldn't achieve that in such a small volume?

The USB chargers do seem a nice product though

I gave up waiting for the folding plug, and bought a thinplug and thincharger.
