Believe it or not there was a program on the beeb last year about the best ten places to live and where not to live in the UK,based on crime rates. Liverpool did not get a mention in the "where not to live" category.

Every town/city has its crime some more than other...whats your like?

This was what I was thinking and if it's anything like dipping turned wooden products then there will be the counterintuitive effect that the faster you pull the chain from the bucket the thicker the coating of paint will be.

=============================== Where I live has no relevance to the OP's requirements and the safety of *his* environment. A person (the OP in this instance) who plans to spend about £250-00 on decorative chain has obviously done some kind of risk assessment as far as theft of his chain is concerned. He clearly feels that the risk of theft is small and that's why he is buying decorative chain and not razor wire.

can easily cut one of the closed types and re-weld on the ends of your chain sections.

Yes thanks for that.

I'm thinking I might use the shackles with bolts and locknut them into place. They will need to be removable for future painting.

You could always use a small padlock.

Be aware that newly galvanised metal is hard to paint, or at least to get paint too stick to it for any length of time. Hammerite would not be a good choice IMHO its to hard and will chip easily .

True. Interesting thought. Thanks

I think that pretty much does the chain thing to death.

So now the only remaining challenge is fixing pieces of slate to the top of brick and concrete pillars...

Any offers?

OK... point taken. Can you suggest another way or suitable paint to make it black?

You can get specialised primers for galvanised metal, I have used Barcoat

by a cellulose black top coat which is still ok after 5years on a galvanised gate. BUT I don't think this will work very well on chain, and the F^%&ing EU is in the process of banning the sale of cellulose paint.

Thanks a lot

I'll research that a little more.

Powder coating would be a solution. A bit expensive, perhaps...

Painting over galvanising, especially new galvanising, by using a paint and technique not expressly formulated for painting over galvanising is a waste of time, money and effort. In a short period of time it will look like shit :)

Indeed. The standard practice for galvanised structures such as radio masts is to let them weather for up to a year before painting.

Mmm.. might be worth a look.

I wonder if that can be applied over galvanising......

Not the desired outcome.

Are you aware of a paint that is?

============================ Would powder coating be flexible? My impression is that powder coating leaves a hard finish which would probably 'weld' the links of a chain together.

Do you actually open your eyes as you walk around the area? It's a s**t hole, all the off-licenses have polycarbonate or toughened glass screens floor to ceiling and a letter box to pass money through to pay for your goods which are passed back through same. The shoplifters actually have rounds, flogging their knock off. Apart from the drug war going on at the moment (which, admittedly, is killing off the worst of the scallies), the smacked up addicts checking out cars when you park in the city centre, the fact that you have to lock your front door to protect yourself from your neighbours, it's a lovely place with some beautiful architecture, shame it's all falling down and left to rot really. It seems Scousers and the idiots who have been conned into buying city centre property for stupid money had blinkers fitted at birth or exchange of contracts. The reason it doesn't appear in the theft statistics is because there's f**k all worth nicking that isn't nailed/chained/locked down and CCTV'd to death, all the scallies go across the water or east on the M62 to Manchester on their ram raiding/shop lifting day trips.

On zinc coatings the correct primers to use are zinc phosphate or zinc chromate.
