Morse kit?

I remember finding these items easily, but that was back in the 1950s. Have you tried Anchor Supplies (URL below)? Last time I visited, I came away with several items of a similar (WWII -ish) age. They do seem to be having a clear-out so you may be too late.

Maplin do some kits which may be of interest.

Or you can easily make a (simple) morse key out of scraps of timer, wire and brass.

any 2 core wire push switch or morse key buzzer or (oscillator & speaker)

The morse key can be made from bits of scrap using a paperclip or something a bit beefier. Its just a press-to-make switch for a basic one, and canb e made with as little as 2 drawing pins and 1 paperclip if wished. The fancier ones you push one way to dot and the other way to dash, but thats optional for your app.

You could use 1 core wire with an earth rod at each end, using the earth as the 2nd conductor, but troubles are liable to occur with such a method, and you'll need higher battery voltage.

You pasted: free.uk.amatuer.radio

and your own definition above differs from that! And, looking it up, it's:

free.uk.amateur-radio

(and that IS pasted from the name...)

If old Morse had went into Maplin they'd have told him they were out of Leyden jars this week but had a nice line in electric eel wristbands for wearing in the cylinderotheque

Theres also a 2 wire variant: one of these circuits at each end of the cable:

+--|>|-----+------------- to cable + | diode | | | +| | Battery o / -| morse / | key / | o bulb | | | +----------+------------- to cable -

That would have been quite prescient of them: Samuel Morse died in 1872 which was about five years before Edison got round to inventing the phonograph cylinder...

Thanks very much, all of you, for the responses. Most helpful, and I am now inspired to go off and have a go at making something. I'll report back (briefly) but in the meantime thanks for the inspiration.
