"Portsmouth's plans for a new stadium by the sea have been sunk by the Royal Navy. The stadium, which would have jutted into the harbour, cuts into a naval exclusion zone. Pompey are now planning to build a new home on top of a rubbish tip near Port Solent."

The navy shouldn't even be in Portsmouth. During WW2 it was useless as big Liverpool was really the main naval base. The U-Boat war was controlled and centred there and the large battleships anchored and docked there too. The dry dock facilities were much superior to Portsmouth of course. Then Pompey then should be allowed to build their stadium.

The only reason the navy is at Portsmouth is so the lazy London based MOD men can drive there easily.

Is that the site that is to the right, just after joining the M275 to Portsmouth?

Which is irrelevant to the point made. The RN still shouldn't be in Portsmouth. Too near to the Continent in the restricted Channel. As I said, the main base for the RN in WW2, although not an official base, was Liverpool, as it was massive as a port and could take the world's largest ships, had deep water shelter, massive ship repair facilities, and well protected in sea and air (no U-Boats sunk a ship around the Mersey in WW2). Ships could break out into the Atlantic quite easily too. Ever seen Portsmouth harbour? Tiny!!! All the ships can't fit in.

The RN fleet is probably a tenth of the size it was in WWII.

Unfortunately Portsmouth has just a big theft problem as Liverpool They have had to remove the propellers from the aircraft carrier in Portsmouth dockyard to prevent it from being nicked. :)

will have to cut and paste the above link to see the satellite picture of the propellers. Just clicking on the link results in it being shortened and just getting a map of the dockyard.

It still can't all fit into that tiny harbour.

I have never heard of anyone pinching the propellers off large ships in Liverpool.

Have they bricked up the exit from the dockyard? At least two ships have a beam too wide for any visible exit. Is that another theft prevention measure?
