Modern Washing Machines

that'll go down well

would only do one load overnight though

or train a dog

FWIW it is possible to do a short hot wash on most machines, just switch off after 30m of washing & restart on rinse, then restart on rinse/spin. Hardly ideal, but might be usable short term.

6) Use a cold water detergent (15 degrees C) and use a fast eco cold wash.

You only need hotter washes for a minority of items.

Hot washes can actually "cook in" stains so that filling with only hot water or heating water in a kettle will make things worse not better.

Consider also that the rinse cycle will use a lot less water on a modern eco machine so consider using 30% to 50% of the detergent stated on the side of the packet/bottle.

Even my cheap machine has independent control of program and temperature. The time taken for the wash increases with temperature as the machine waits for the water to be heated.

Washing is only part of the process. Hanging the clothes to dry (preferably outside) will kill bugs.

Or an industrial-sized one, as used in a hotel or laundrette.

That's much too much. A tablespoon of powder is more than enough. Excess only makes more mess inside the machine, leading to smells and poorer washing.

No. Water only needs to be warm enough to remove oil. That can be achieved at low tempertures - viz Gunk on car engines.

What bugs are you finding on your clothes?

Rephrased:- The rinsing and the washing will be crap as not enough water is being used to do the job properly.

So that's why we don't steam clean car engines?

Read the reports.

Yes, also the big domestic LGs use hot and cold water, take 8KG IIRC, adjust the water level according to the clothes weight and also have a

20min cycle AIUI. They are a bit large however for the average kitchen..

That's why I don't cook with Castrol.

I've not seen the reports on your clothes. Are you in the habit of chewing your clothes ?

I've better things to do than hang around a washing machine waiting for it to finish. Do people keep on checking their washing line to fetch stuff in as soon as it's dry?

Rinsing is OK if you use the appropriate amount of detergent for the wash.

Domestic LGs are standard size (~60x60x85) up to at least 9kg (just done a load of research re. new machine - the expensive Siemens had an intermittent and 'wandering' fault, so JL's collecting it on Tuesday and bringing the 8kg version 'own'-brand). IIRC, LG and Samsung go up to 12kg - they are bigger, but I didn't really look at those much.

Perhaps the shorter washes are intended for synthetic fabrics, for which they deem the slower spin to be more suitable.

ISTR catering dishwasher retain the hot water throughout the day. Just keep topping it up and filtering it throughout the cycle. This is how they can carry out a wash cycle so quickly.

Shes washing 18kg to 27kg of clothes a day? ( 40-60 lbs of clothes ?) (Based on average Hotpoint stated capacities) Every day ?

A quick Google suggests shirts weigh about 8oz and jeans 1-1.5 lbs so that would suggest 80 to 120 shirts or 26 to 39 pairs of jeans or the equivalent

This figures are of course theoretical. I've no idea if women load their machines to their full capacity or not. Even so its a helluva lot of washing,

& it makes them wear out faster.

Well duh, you unscrew the toilet seat & run it through the dishwasher.

That drove me up the wall about our previous (Bosch) machine, but our current (AEG) one unlocks the door immediately when the wash finishes & it beeps, or immediately when you press "OK" after the drying finishes & beeps. (It keeps shuffling the contents around every minute or two for a little while after drying finishes or until you press "OK". This is supposed to reduce wrinkling.)
