mig welders

Does anyone have anything to say about the SIP TopMIG 140 dp? It is a dual purpose gas / no gas welding set for full size bottles, currently on offer in Halfords for £280 - I was thinking of buying one for general work in my workshop (amateur)

Thankyou for any comments.

Spent ages reading about all of them and in the meantime saved enough to get the 171 Turbo.

Just get something that takes big bottles and don't buy it from Halfords. ;-)

Lots of people here don't seem to like the SIP welders but I have one that works well for me.

Mine is a 'dual mode' one as well and I think it's the same 140 amp rating. It didn't cost as much as the Halfords price you're quoting but doesn't take the 'full size' bottles whatever they may be. Mine cost £169 if I remember right.

I'm one of them! There does seem to be an odd discrepancy there. I and several others have used SIPs, and found the wirefeed mechanisms to be pants. For me this was the case of three different SIPs.

And yet there are at least two pretty reliable people on here who are perfectly happy with their SIPs (Chris G and Dave P).

I suspect this may mean that the wirefeed was changed at some point. Whether it was made better or worse, I can't say.

FWIW, I'm pretty happy with my Clarke 150. It's been used extensively on several full chassis builds, and still works really well. If you do get a mig which takes small bottles, the first thing to do is buy a regulator and get yourself a big bottle.

Pub gas will also work--if you know the landlord well.

I'm looking to do the reverse.

I have a Lincoln SP 170 MIG welder that I now use rarely and can't justify the 57 quid a year rental from BOC for the Argoshield bottle.

This is on top of the 'Portapak' bottles (something else to go later) once I'ved used up the gas cutting up some steel stock ;-)

So I have been looking about (and with help from this list) found a very local suppluer of a 6kg exchangable Co2 bottle / regulator option. I believe there is a 60 pound 'deposit' on the bottle and 16 quid to exchange it but no rental. ;-)

If I wanted a Co2 / Argon mix I could probably use one of the disposable bottles.

Less someone knows a rent free (legal) solution to the big bottles of Argoshield?

All the best ..

I also contacted Air Products and others and got the same reply. All now on rental (safety checks etc) ;-(

Just go for the Co2 bottle as a cash in hand deal. ;-)

Mine's working a treat.

For mild, yes, plain co2 is ok. Not for stainless. Not in any way.

Doesn't it work if you don't know the landlord well? :-)
