Anyone know if it's within regs to run meter tails from meter to consumer unit inside a cavity wall? Approx length...2m

That's how it was done when my Mum's bungalow was built by Barrett's

Yes - it's the norm. for inset meter boxes.

Watch the current rating though, if the cavity's insulated. If installation Method 4 applies or if there's more than 100mm length surrounded by thermal insulation you'd need to use 35mm^2 tails to achieve 100A rating.

Copying the practice of any large house builder is not likely to _ensure_ that you are following either best practice or the regs.

A big builder ran both tails at my parents in RED and also put a 15amp screw terminal connector halfway down one of the main bonds, all the sockets upstaiars are spured off down stairs, no grommets, no shield on the unused fuseways etc .....

Of course, he may have been making the point that that proves it's not the way to do it! :-)

Not that this means much

. NHBC Requirements It is noteworthy that the National House-Building Council states, in Section

8.1 - S2 of NHBC Standards, that no cables other than electricity meter tails are to be located in the cavity of an external wall. Where meter tails do have to pass through the cavity, however, this does not preclude the requirements of BS 7671 referred to in this topic having to be met.

the NICEIC do not consider it good practice as the later addition of insulation will affect the current carrying capacity of the tails.
