Loft insulation - heads up

Very sorry if this has been highlighted already (haven't noticed it), but:

B&Q are selling loft insulation (standard size) at £3.00 a pack, i.e. £1.00 a roll.

It's scraggy looking stuff, but to my eye it definitely seems to do the job. It's labelled "for DIY only -- not for use in government sponsored top-up schemes" (or summat).

I saw it advertised in the paper a week past Saturday, *rushed* to get some Monday, they had plenty left, and a week later, yesterday, when I was in there they seemed to have had a whole new truckload delivered - hence my notifying it here.

I got a load of the equivalent offer when Homebase was doing it. Got a load of bags in the loft yet to be rolled out, and I used some for my extension roof. It was labelled "not for new builds" or something ! If its the same stuff, its a dirty brown colour and quite dirty / dusty to lay - wear a mask. Simon.

My local B&Q ran the offer about a month ago. Extremely good value.

Don't worry about the appearance - it's actually rather more pleasant to handle than some forms of glasswool insulation.

Son in Law and I bought some earlier this year at B&Q. Price then was £5 for

3 pack. Same warning on it. But rest of print said it was subsidised by British Gas. So I guess this is their way of improving Customer Energy Efficiency, which they are required to do by Regulator. Hence use for another "Government subsidised initiative" would be a double subsidy. PS It is dusty, from recycled glass, but installed no probs.

Wickes have something similar

In article ,

That's because it's subsidised already. It was discovered that the professional installers paid to do the free loft insulations were going round to Wickes and the like, buying the cheap insulation, and pocketing the difference. Nett result is that only half the houses the government thought were getting extra insulation really were, and the installers had walked off with the subsidy for the other half.

Oh! A govt. dept. taken to the cleaners by some wide boys? How astonishingly unlikely!
