Hi I'm after a frost free freestanding freezer about 250L net capacity. Liebherr seems to fit the bill. I can't find any proper reviews but did find 2 on one site which both expressed extreme disappointment with them. Does anyone have any experience with them? Or can anyone recommend any other good freezers? (or anyone who reads German who can find some German reviews?) Thanks Doug
Yes. I have one and it's excellent. If it weren't, it would have been returned and replaced with something else.
It's well made, virtually silent and the automatic defrost works properly. There are a good set of solid pull out baskets and a shield that can be inserted part way down if you want to reduce the freezing capacity
I have their built in fridge and its excellent bar one thing..they used a vac formed skin for the door inside, and the moulded shelve end that clips into it and this can't take the pounding of gallon milk bottles being slammed into it daily. To ve fair they did replace te shelves FOC, but now the door skin has ripped.
To be fair, no other fridge I have had is better, The Liebherr is the best of a bad lot IMHO.
I only expect a fridge or freezer to keep things cold as advertised and not breakdown under daily wear and tear. Most won't pass that test. The Liebherr is better than most IMHO.
For conventional stuff I have found LEC to be cheap and adequate.

I think not - it certainly requires a manual defrosting every 15 months or so. No problems with it. Having said that the old comet own label (Proline) we had previously for about 16 years worked perfectly throughout (albeit a little noisily) and only had to have its handle refitted in a slightly different position every 4 years when it managed to break off again!

Good point here - most fridges work well - but the robustness of the internal fittings are important. Likewise with dishwashers. The functionality of such appliances is usually good - but the design and strength of the interiors are another matter.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that Liebherr make fridges for Miele (think Miele only make their own washing machines and dishwashers), so that must go in their favour?

You'd need the large model. These things are built like the proverbial brick sh*thouse (the WMC).
Are you saying that from experience or do you know if they have a feedback system to ensure that they defrost until ice on the heat exchanger has been cleared? Having just spent 2 hours dismantling and defrosting my Hotpoint FF[1] which had iced up solid[2] I find it has no evident mechanism for detecting ice build up, so presumably the defrost cycle runs open-loop, and in this case goes on building up ice until it stops working.
[1] posts passim - google [2] for the second time since we got it last September: the first time we got the engineer who apparently waved a hairdryer into it somewhere (I don't know where: SWMBO was there at the time but didn't pay much attention to what he was doing
Well... all I can say is that it hasn't been turned off since new - 2 years ago. There isn't any substantial frosting - perhaps a couple of mm on a surface near the top where the evaporator is together with a fan.
Whether it's timed in some way or has a detection arrangement, I'm not sure.
