LED Torch

A mate had a "gooutdoor" higear LED torch/head lamp :

"Burn Time: 20 minutes of light from 1 minute of winding (approx.)"

I was very impressed with brightness of it - good value at 4.99 - but buggered if I am paying 5.00 to join the discount club.

Does anyone have any recommendations of similar?

(If not I will borrow his discount card and get one :-)

I'd certainly be reluctant to buy anything from them; their stupid discount card system really annoys me and they must have spent a massive amount of time, money and effort putting two different prices on everything.

Perhaps they have done some research to show that it breeds loyalty overall, but for me it just alienates me.

IKEA have a wind-up 3xLED torch for just over a fiver, I bought one yesterday and it seems quite good for emergency use but only time will tell how long the gears will last.

Given that LED's consume very little power, why not use a battery one? They last for years in LED torches.

Love them actually (but for the "wrong" reasons):

They do a price match + 10% on everything and against everything sold in the UK (inc online). It gives me great pleasure to get one over them time and time again. Probably saved me £150 in refunds so far...

Yup - I've got a decently bright 5 LED type just fine for taking the dog out etc, and the three AAs Have lasted for years. I'd imagine the average wind up type would be broken by now.

I've pretty well cleared out the local Aldi remainder stock of Glow in the dark Halloween torches. Excellent value at 99p including batteries.

That's Christmas presents for the family members sorted.

Sounds good but is it true ? I'm sure the onme I have from B&Q about 4 years ago is 1 mins light for 20mins wind up and I do get wound up if I have to wind it up to use it.

I have one with 3 leds and agree with the 20 mins light. No distinguishing marks other than CE under the handle. Probably sourced from Viking (discount stationary).

Adapt it so you can wind it up using a cordless drill, much easier. You could just get a torch that used the drill battery but that would lack a bit of the spirit of DIY in getting some tools out.

Not really as it was originally intented for teh loft while I was doing some wiring and needed to have the power off, I've never taken a drill into the loft.

Do they exist ?. I feel a dragons den moment .......

Well luckily I was listening to some podcasts on my iPod so selected the torch option and I was sorted. Would have been better with a later model then I could have taken a picture too, which I normally do anyway.

Yup - often part of a set. But most wouldn't need a torch that lasts as long (or powerful) as one would which uses a drill battery. Which makes for a large torch.

I have one. Nice torch but finding 15.6v bulbs for it can be a bit of a bugger.

That's not the same is it. I thought you meant you could buy a torch that could use a drill battery.

I've never brought a torch as part of a DIY kit, not sure I'd want to as I don;t normally use the two together.

I'm sure you can if you check all the suppliers. Although they do tend to be part of a set which shares batteries because very few indeed would buy such a device on its own. Since the battery is the most expensive part of most power tools.

drill. But then my windup & recharchable torch does fine until teh battery= goes flat, my problem started when I found out that the windup time and th= e light time weren;t what was claimed.

Do a Google on Makita Torch. (I assume you mean Makita?) Lots available. But all rather expensive for what they are.

Ooh, they do one that takes my 7.2v impact driver batteries. Not cheap though, think I'll stick with a head torch.
