Last time I knock B&Q

Ran out of 1mm, only wanted 25m so went to local electrical factors, only 50m available =A334 plus VAT.

Went to B&Q for a butchers and they had 25m for =A312 and 50m was only =A318!!

They had the Wind turbine in there, at =A31600 or sommat, probably only take 30 years to pay for itself !!!

You went to B&Q to met IMM?

And you found a source of free energy that is cheaper than a gas boiler? Then what?

Probably retail, I dont have an account, but to charge a markup of 65% over trade is a bit OTT !!

Dang! even my corner DIY shop how'd do you george wouldnt have charged me that much.

So I would have paid about 14GBP for 25 metres.

Only 65%? I've had 90% from the wholesaler I use. I don't have an accoun= t and don't use them all that often either. Having said that =A313.98 is about what I'd pay for 50m 2.5 T&E, maybe my wholesaler just has higher =

list prices...

It depends on the manufacturer and their list prices.

Some are extremely high and wholesalers do indeed give discounts in the

90-95% range. I think my record was 97% on something with list price in the hundreds....

What's more, you can't self install it!

"This product is not available for self install, you will be contacted on purchase of this item regarding installation"

- presumably at more cost.

Have you looked recently? Copper has gone through the roof. Got a new TLC cat today - 1mm TW&E is 21.99 + VAT for 100 metres. 2.5 is 38.95.

Thank gawd I've got enough 'in stock' for my own use to probably see me out. ;-)

Trade or retail? I get 65% trade discount on cable, so if that was the list price, it would cost me £13.98 including the VAT.

The trade discount on cable is particularly high. Most stuff I get around

25-30% off, although on a few specialist electrical accessories it can be as low as 15%.

Explian that then, how cable do you buy in a month? Why should someone buying 2km pay the same as someone buying 25m?

That wouldn't be a markup. A markup takes a base price and adds a percentage. This is not the same. Let's say the cable had cost £100 list. A 65% discount would make the net price £35.

However, a 65% markup on £35 is £22.75 and would have made the total £57.75

Because they are able to negotiate, because the supplier wants to sell product and because there was nobody buying larger volumes in the place at the time.

Cable is one item where list prices are high. Some places simply sell close to street price -e.g. TLC has said 1mm T&E cable at £14.50 (17.04 inc) and that's before asking for discount.

TBH no I haven't needed to buy any recently and I am aware that copper has rocketed up (damn Chinese...). As for TLC prices, my wholesaler normally beats them by a quid or three and no delivery charge as I just wander in and collect.

I probably don't as a full rewire of at least the house is required at some point.

Easy, he would have been better making a sale and some profit instead of me walking away and buying from B&Q !!! not great buissines sense really :-)

Survey and installation are included. Personally, I'd want the survey before I purchase.
