Large Nuts

Does anyone know a source of large nuts? I am after one to fit a kitchen mixer tap mount so probably about 28mm with a 2mm or so pitch. Searching for 28mm nut turns up only M28 nuts which are a little too chunky.

Whereabouts are you? There tend to be specialist nut shops somewhere on the edges of major cities. If they don't have it they will know someone who does. Obviously it helps if you know exactly what you want.

Yellow pages might work pretty well for this under engineering.

I am usually looking for large Whitworth or US threaded nuts to match imported US kit (they haven't heard of metric).

Yes, but they also come with coarse pitches, for holding bridges together. As yours is almost certainly a fine pitch, you'll need to look through plumbing supplies, not engineering.

British plumbing, for the most part, uses BSP threads and that sounds like 3/4" BSP - 1.04" OD and 14 TPI.

Are you thinking of something like this?

looking for.

Probably similar but I think it is more than 3/4". The existing one is also a bit thinner and without the flange.

BSP threads are measured by the bore of the wrought or cast iron pipe that the thread would originally have be cut onto. 3/4" BSP is 1.04" OD

- about 26mm.

Ahh, you learn something new every day. I will try to get a chance to measure it tonight.

Excellent shop. Quite the most pleasant and helpful I've come across, even when you only want a couple of bolts.

Newer US vehicles seem to use metric parts - it's a pain because everything else I have is SAE, but I'm slowly having to build up a stash of metric tools just to work on the van (which is an '08).

Well finally got a chance to measure this and it looks like it is 33mm diameter. So probably not BSP.

I can get normal M33 nuts here:

Sounds like a 1" BSP thread to me.
