Laptop Problem

I can't power my laptop up. I assumed it was just the battery being flat but it wont power up off the charger. It could be the charger but how common is it for the power supply in the laptop being faulty. I have never heard of a power supply in a laptop giving up.

Does the power indicator light come on on the laptop when the power supply is plugged in? In my experience, problems with the power lead connection to the laptop are quite common.

Have you tried powering up without the battery in place?

No, I did remove the battery and put it back. I phoned up a repairers and he suggested this but I am going to get the wife to take it in for a diagnostic check anyway.

Its completely dead. I am now now going to get a local repairer to run a diagnostic anyway but it is useful to know what might be wrong. He said that charger and power supply problems are fairly common.

The join where the socket is soldered to the PCB often fails, propping the connector on a book can help it make contact at first, but sooner or later that will stop working. It's often possible to resolder though - it's chunky rather than computer scale.

I've done this on a couple of occasions although my repairs haven't always lasted well.

Why don't laptops come with a couple of flat surface mounted connections that a magnetic power cable end could attach to?

FWIW I am now on my fourth power supply for my Samsung V25 Laptop. It is about 3 years old; either the wire goes just where it exits the psu or within the moulding of the laptop connector plug. The connector is peculiar to Samsung [surprise].But the PSU's only cost about £18 so I am not that bothered
