If it really needs support, knock out a brick, put a timber "needle" through, and support that with your props while you knock through and put in your lintel.

Knock out a brick(two if its a two brick wall) to gain a hole in the other side of wall above where the lintel will sit, wide enough to put a 2x3 piece of timber or scaffold plank to pass through. Pass the timber through this hole and use the acros to support the weight(if any), either side then do the same on the other side where the door way has been marked out. Then below the support knock the first row of brick outs bearing in mind you want a ledge either side of the top of the door frame for the lintel to sit on. Once the lintel is in place the rest of the brickwork can be cut either side with a chaser for ease of pushing the existing brickwork out rather than bashing away with a lump hammer.
