Is anyone else being beta'd

I access this group through deja.com and suddenly it's started to route me through Google Groups (Beta). It's been Google for ages but this Beta thing is new. My posts seem to be getting through in about twenty minutes instead of the usual six hours.

Is this happening to everyone or am I just the lucky one? If it is happening to everyone else, apart from the appearance and rapid posting, what other differences are there?

I suddenly seem to be going through Beta. Like you say posts show up quickly but I hate the look of the thing. Also I can't see all the groups. Uk.legal.moderated for example has dissappeared. Kevin

I think everyone's being beta'd. It first appeared one morning last week but went back to normal by the afternoon.

I found it a bit painful until I found the "show headings only" option

-- seeing the first few lines of every post on a heavily-used NG like uk.d-i-y is rather tedious.

The change to proportional spacing will give us a problem with ASCII art.

After last week's trial, I was threatening to find another newsreader but maybe it will be liveable with.

The 20 minutes posting will be a boon, especially if it also works for posts sent in other ways. It's always been annoying to spend time preparing some words of wisdom only to find someone much wiser got there 5 hours previously.

There seems to be something funny with the "post reply" feature -- I typed the first draft of the above into the box provided, but after a page which made me sign in blood to their user agreement, it changed to another empty box, so I've had to type it all again. Chris

Why not just change to a decent ISP that allows direct access to newsgroups via their own server? I use Pipex, and posts appear within minutes.

I look at that one too and if you type in uk legal moderated in the search box top rh side, it goes straight to it.

Yeah, the quick posting is excellent, it's about time too :)) Maybe now if you have an emergency you can get it sorted before the house burns down!!! I can't seem to interspace my posts with others though. It used to be quite useful to be able to reply paragraph by paragraph but I can't see how you can do it now unless you copy the other post first and paste it into the reply :(( Perhaps someone else will know how to do it..

The obvious answer would be to use a "real" usenet posting progam and talk directly to a news server, rather than mess about using web interfaces like google (which is great for searching, but less good for posting).

If your ISP provided news server is not up to much, there there are others out there that available to anyone and quite good.

As an asside I stumbled over another newgroup aggregator service that seems to provide a web front end for this group and a few others. See

I was just thinking of saying the exact same! My posts, via the Pipex text only server, appear within 5-10 minutes. If they took 20 minutes I'd be well pissed, how can you call that rapid. If I email myself from one SMTP server to a different providers POP server it's instant, that's rapid.

For the moment at least you can continue to access all the old lists by going through google.co.uk rather than google.com

Don't even need to do that, the German News server works just fine :)

Everyone has their own preferences, but accessing News through web pages is something I find sufficently painful that I just don't access news at all if that's the only choice. There really are much more appropriate tools for the purpose.

Minutes? If it takes more than 5 to 10 seconds on plusnet's news server I figure they must have a temporary glitch...

This is as far back as my server goes. Prior to the latest Google set up it was excellent data recovery.

I don't know how to call up the same data on the Google site. I just fiddle with the URL in Mailgate.org.

(Sorry about the expanded message list. I didn't want to give the impression there was nothing on the newsgroup in those days.)

Damn I just realised what it is I don't like about it. With the old set up I could access 100 threads on a page. now it's only 10.

Ditto with Zen, but how long do articles take to propagate to other news servers around the world?

How long is a piece of string.... Probably impossible to predict for more than a handfull of close peers.
