IP/WiFi relay/switches

I'm struggling to find any affordable means of remotely switching something on, at either mains, or with a relay.

Is there a unit which can be setup, using port forwarding etc, such that I can switch on, say a light or audible device, from a distant PC or mobile internet device?

I can find many non-IP solutions but struggling to find anything resembling what I want.

Can anyone help?

APC Switched Rack PDU's but rather overkill for a single device.

Google ip mains switch provides smaller stuff but still >=A3100.

Raspberry Pi and relay?

How much money do you have? It's possible to buy remote IP powerstrips that can control a number of devices. Used in remote lights-out datacentres to physically shut down kit when all else fails. Obviously these devices are priced in common with the midel for all DCs. "As much as we can get away with". So typically they have been priced around £1500 for an 8 socket powerstrip. Lindy offer "bargain" priced strips at £222.

press, lose seven sockets and you can save £50.

Many thanks for all the replies and ideas.

I have to say that making my own sounds rather practical!! Almost trivial with a WiFi module, noddy CPU, power wart and a relay!!

I'm surprised there's not more available, at what I would describe to be consumer pricing.

If you don't need the WiFi a Raspberry Pi kit for =A340 from CPC would j= ust require the addition of a suitable relay and possibly a driver transistor.

The consumer stuff is that Lightwave collection of bits. I don't think most people have any real need for long distance remote control of light= s etc, same room maybe but not across the world. Times switches are cheaper...

Does it have to be Internet controlled? Plenty of GSM controlled relay switches on eBay.

And if you want WiFi you could plug a USB one into it...

can control up to 4 relays and can also monitor the state of other inputs. 1-wire temperature sensors can be connected.

Remote access (i.e. from outside your home) can be achieved using port forwarding on a broadband router.

You might want to google for Home Automation to find other products.

Have a look thru these two sites. The second one we have used a few of their telephone switches for long distance remote control using a Sipgate number 10 quid of credit lasts a long time!..

Might be a tad more expensive doing that but you didn't spec just how remote the remote was;!...
