[Mungo "Two Sheds" Toadfoot]

I have here a flat-pack hideaway computer desk wot has got two doors on the front of it. The doors fit flush across the front, i.e. they're not set in. I'd like to be able to open the doors fully through 270 degrees so they rest against the sides when the desk is in use but the cranked hinges only allow about 220 degrees before the door contacts the side and can't go any further.

Are there magic hinges available which would allow the door to swing out slightly when opening so that it can open fully?

These allow the doors to open almost fully i.e. just short of 180 degs.

Sounds like a bog standard kitchen cabinet hinge - remember, those doors overlap the carcass so the hinge must have some outward motion built in.

Screwfix have then under "concealed hinge". I think there is a version that screws on both sides, without needing the big round hole - I'm just looking for the same for a lid on the bog boxing...

Having a slight problem with my visualisation of the cosmic all but if you had piano hinges with the hinge pin slightly proud of the side of the desk would this not allow the door to go all the way back through 270 degrees?

ISTR the top of our old upright piano would fold right back on itself.

I guess these are lay-on doors, like a kitchen unit, in which case concealed 165 deg hinges are really the only option because they move the door out sufficiently to clear the carcass. In any case, other types of hinge don't work with chipboard or mdf because you can't get a good enough fixing into the edges.

Hmmm... I have the same trouble visualising what hinges will do, and where the appropriate parts are fixed. Here, therefore, is some pickchers wot I have took. You will observe that when the door is opened to full capacity only the dog can easily pass through the gap, therefore I'd like it to fold right back. It's not a life-or-death thing but it would make me happy, and that's all that really matters, isn't it?

Yeah - those hinges won't but I can't see why piano hinges wouldn't do the trick - need to check that the bit holding the pin in is only 90 degrees round so that there is a clear space for the other part of the hinge to rotate. Go and have a look at cheapo hinges in one of the sheds and see if you can fold them back on themselves.

If I didn't need 270 degrees they would possibly be perfect, though I can't for the life of me work out how they would be applied to my desk. But that could just be me. I'd not be good at the Krypton Factor but I could build you an engine.

I'm thinking the front of the door, which becomes the back when it's opened, IYSWIM, will still touch the side of the cabinet when it reaches the angle of picture three in the link wot I posted. I also suspect piano hinges would not allow the doors to close if placed so that the door goes right back against the side of the unit, but then I really do have trouble visualising hinges working. The mind gets bored in 0.03s and wanders and I'm unable to get it back.

It looks like yours have the hinge pin at the back of the door. I reckon it needs to be extentded around the edge of the door so it lies at the front.

If you google for "270 degree hinge", you get loads of things like this:-

only problem (apart from finding a UK source) is that this setup makes the hinge specific to one thickness of door.

Mind-you, there seems to be a few other designs scattered amongst the google hits too.
