indesit and british gas...

Hi,

I've bought a second hand Indesit gas cooker (K 6432 G/G) and need to install it. (am told the cooker is 1 1/2 yrs old)

I'm not corgi and am not interested in installing it myself - so got British Gas out - they said they couldn't fit it - didn't have the parts..Indesit said they don't supply the parts needed as they're installers parts...

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place bacause I don't know part it is, as it aint my job which is why I'm paying for it..I've been to the service manager at british gas and they basically are saying tough - get a new cooker.

The Indesit brochure says it's got a threaded G1/2 gas female fitting for the inlet.

Laymans description is that there's a threaded nut that slides up and down and that's all. (there is another pipe on the other side - but that's sealed off).

I've since bought a flexi-hose and a connector (midbrass 1/2" Brass socket).

I've put this on to the cooker and flexihose (trial attempt, NOT going to fit it), it doesn't seem that tight and the nut on the inlet pipe can still slide.

What is missing and who supplies it - as when I get British Gas out I want to know who's responsible for this ??

Any help advice appreciated.

If you get BG to install it then they should supply any parts needed.

I would suggest getting a local independent CORGI rather than British Gas. He could probably turn up any parts needed out of solid gold on a lathe pedal-powered by Aberdonian virgins on overtime rates and still come in cheaper than BG.

Required for this installation is a stability bracket (never included on any cooker except the most expensive, IME). a felixble gas hose. a fitting which will allow correct connection of the hose to the cooker.

BG would go out of business if they had to compete on doing the job to customer's requirements and not living off their perceived status as the 'experts'. I this case BG could be trying to wriggle out of installing a second hand cooker. If you have not got the installation/user manual then that might be enough to stop them. Instructions should be avaiable form Indesit.

Cookers seem to have either a 1/2" female iron connection which will take the hose directly or a nut with 1/2" female thread which is captive on a pipe whose end has a flat flange. You seem to have the latter.

The reason you can't connect the hose to the cooker directly is that although the threads will screw together the connection on the cooker side is not intended to make a seal on the threads but on the flat flange. The hose is intended to seal on the threads. As you have found screwing the hose directly into this cooker will not make for a reliable and gas tight connection.

A fitting is produced which sorts this problem out. It's probably in the BES catalogue but I can't be assed to look. HTH

Get a CORGI installer in who's got more clue than British Gas. Cost you a fraction as much as well.
