I need a bigger hole

Just got a new washing machine and found out (the hard way) that the pump is rather faster than the on the old machine. The current waste is 32mm (yes, I know!) that has been OK for 30 years or so and is clear right through. I need to fit 40mm, but making the hole (which, IIRC, is just big enough for the 32mm) up to, say 50mm, would be rather difficult with a core drill.

Any ideas please on a way to do it - only SDS and chisel seem possible.

Bang in a piece of wood, a shaved down a piece of 2x2 or similar, then drill through the centre with a wood bit or a normal HSS drill, then use the core drill

Piece of wood with a 50mm hole through it fastened to the wall and use it to locate the core drill? I've not tried that with a 50mm core drill, but recently used it for a 25mm that I had no guide drill for.

Once started the cut sides of the wall will guide the core. Getting started will be the tricky bit. Cut a bit of thickish wood that will jam in the existing hole and use that to guide the pilot drill?

Use a butt plug

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try the template one first as it's the quickest. The old machine is still here (it's going to my cousin's daughter or to BHF as it still works), so space is getting tight.

Can?t you just attache the washing machine drain hose with spigot (like this

)? That way you wouldn?t have to drill it out (though you might need some sort of AIV).

If you have a core drill then its not that difficult. The surefire way is to make a hole in a bit of ply that the core fits through - hold or fix that against the wall and use it to guide the core for the start of the drilling.

However you will probably find that small cores can be guided with a gloved hand anyway.

Interesting device that. I'd rather not put pressure on the waste as it's push-fit! There'd be some pressure between the inlet and any restriction.

Right, 'tis done! Toolstation, 50mm TCT +arbor +pilot drill (for future use), stick it in the SDS and 'centre' it in the existing crater (the old fittings were buried in filler, so chiselling them out left a rough lead-in). Impressed by the ease and little dust there was.

New waste is in and m/c now drains enthusiastically and is most grateful.

Just need to make some spacers for the pipe clips outside - the new pipe is about 30mm from the wall. Had to use spacers inside as well, but found that 15mm pipe clips cut down to the base of the clip part were just the right stand-off and area for the job.

Thanks for the suggestions - lump hammer still in reserve!
