HP 5000N

all old LJs are good, but do get them up to the mark.

And realise their standby power is not up to modern standards, and they may need external network print servers or parallel wires..

Colour Laserjet? Enormous clunky old thing, weighs about five tons?

We have a 5000N and a 5500DN at work. Got the 5000 with two dozen assorted carts second hand for 100 quid about 5 years ago. Still going strong. Top side cracked at rear with heat from the fuser (plastic turned brittle) but a fix easily bodged. We're going to run it till it dies then dump it, but it just soldiers on in the meantime.

Most jobs go to our newer LJ4700. Depends how far the user has to walk to collect their printout.

The 5000 won't handle the more complex PostScript jobs (this may be a lack of memory) - those have to go to another printer with either more memory or a more recent PS interpreter. The 5500 usually does them OK.

Don't use "remanufactured" carts - false economy and the buggers leak inside the printer. Tedious cleanup job.

ps. don't try and pick it up alone. You'll do your back in.

Big HP laser? Drums good, transfer belts evil.

This is one reason why a HP colour (generally belts) should be backed up with a B&W for the bulk volume.
