How to clean earwax off a phone?

Yes, disgusting, isn't it? It is not even my own earwax.

Anyway, it needs to be done, and I would be grateful for advice on how to do it, without breaking the phone. Some kind of solvent, maybe?

Thanks, David P.

What a perfectly delectable title for the next chinkypinyang or acrabislamick. I hope you don't mind me borrowing it.

If it's a proper telephone the earcap can be unscrewed and washed. Failing that, baby wipe and a cocktail stick.

Look for ways of dismantling the handset - or but a new one they are dead cheap.

All the 'telephone cleaners/sanitisers' I've ever seen are isoprop based. Phonotas built a business on it.

ordinary ethyl alcohol will do anything isopropyl will do. Trying to remember why iso gets used, licensing issues? I cant remember.

Most types of methylated spirits would leave a lingering and unpleasant smell on the earpiece.

And isopopyl alcohol smells like cat pee. What was your point?

That's not something I've ever noticed, but I certainly find that the smell of meths most unpleasant.

(My point was that the only form of ethyl alcohol easily available in this context is methylated spirit - unless one has access to a pharmacy or chemical laboratory.)

Oddly enough, I like the smell of meths. Reminds me of my steam engine.

Ispropyl alcohol.

Sold as screen cleaner, or windscreen washer antifreeze.

Its the mildest organic solvent there is.

It doesn't have ti be denatured to stop it being drunk, and it attacks less plastics.

Seconded - baby wipes will clean more or less anything. I'm slightly worried about the effect that they have on my kids bums, but I always have several packs around the house for cleaning things like computer keyboards, wiping up paint spills etc etc.

One problem with Baby Wipes in these applications is the often have an oil added to counteract the drying effect when used for the intended purpose. This tends to collect subsequent dust, at least. You can get the correct thing for these other applications - google for IPA wipes.

Thats an odd thing to say. Rubbing alcohol, surgical spirit etc are available at any drug store, and assorted stiff drinks most people already have to hand.

FWIW meths isnt just ethyl alcohol, it also has a little methyl and colouring, which change its nature a bit.

Lacking baby wipes, I tried a "Kandoo" children's bum wipe, which removed the earwax (end, er, dare I think it...?) from the phone.
