How much for a bespoke gate?

Need to replace a small wrought iron garden gate, approx 3 foot square... since it has extremely solid steel gateposts, set in concrete, with hinge pins and a catch, I'm thinking it's likely to be best to get one made up specially rather than rip all that lot out.

Haven't the first idea what I'd expect to pay for one (haven't even found anywhere who'd do it yet tbh). Any clues, anyone?

Are there any national companies who specialise in such customised gates?

Would a bespoke timber one work out much cheaper I wonder...

Thanks David

Look in the yellow pages under "Gates & Railings" - or possibly "Wrought Iron" - where you should find outfits like

on what I paid for a custom-designed handrail at the side of my drive a few years ago, you're probably looking at a couple of hundred quid for what you want.

3 feet or about 900mm is a standard width for many of the off-the-peg gates in the likes of Wickes or B&Q, and with some designs (eg arched top) the exact height is less critical.

Worth taking a look, anyway.

Prabably cheapest to build a wooden gate to replace it - you would be lucky to find an off the shelf one that fitted.

T&G floorboard makes good gates and is cheap.

I've always had good service from Cannock Gates

When I was looking at timber gates I found them to be *very* expensive. = I got three gates made and delivered (1 off 3' x 4', 1 off 5' x 4' both wi= th vertical battons and 1 off 15' x 5' field gate) for the price of one Cannock Gates field gates...

I noticed a selection of metal gates in B&Q Warehouse Newcastle yesterda= y, but I didn't look at the quality, construction or prices. I expect them = to be cheap chinese or cheap UK.

If I wanted a metal gate I'd ask the blacksmith down the road and I'd ge= t extactly the design and fitings required. I wouldn't expect it to be che= ap though as it would be completely hand wrought, maybe =A3200 or more. ie = at least a couple of days to make.

Where are you? My brother has his own gates & railings company in Selby Yorkshire.

=============================== You could have the original sand blasted and repaired if it's not too far gone which would be much cheaper than new.

Cost of new depends on whether you're looking for functionality or appearance. You can knock up a timber gate (ledged and braced) in an hour or so at minimal cost.

I equipped my garden with a couple of pedestrian gates and a 3m x 2m vehicle double gate from them, all in wood, about 12 years ago and they are still going strong. I don't think they are expensive for the service they give, particularly not if you buy when they are doing a half-price offer, which seems to crop up fairly frequently.

Ours from a local timber yard/manufacturer look like they did when I fitted 'em about 5 years ago, no drop on any of them. Like I said all three for less than the cost of the field gate from Cannock.

Makes one wonder why "half price" offers are so frequent.

Looks a bit too much like the double glazing "discounts" of 50% for tonight only and I'll have to ring the boss. It's not until you look at the price of local suppliers do you realise that the "discounted" price is the real market price not the over inflated one they are "discounting"...

My mate builds bespoke gates and railings, but I have no recollection of where Lobster is either so I could be even further away!

The last one I saw a couple of weeks back in France was in an aquarium one minute and on my plate not that long afterwards.
