How do I fit this shower wall outlet? Advice needed.

I have a concealed shower valve and want to fit a shower outlet elbow about 15cm beneath the valve, leading to the hose etc.

I can't figure how to fit the elbow. It has a female 0.5" BSP parallel thread and slight chamfer to the entry of that thread, indicating to me that it would like to see an o-ring.

The problem I have is that it all seems too precise. I will have to know EXACTLY the level of my tiled surface so that when the o-ring is properly compressed the elbow, and its chromed flange washer, will be comfortably firm against the tiled wall.

Am I doing this wrongly? Should I be just bodging it with some setting plumbers goop and not using an o-ring at all?

I had a pretty similar problem. Managed to sort it with a combination of lots of washers stacked on top of each other, hemp, jointing compound and some silicone. No leaks so far!

Thanks for that link, I am relieved that it isn't just me puzzled over this fitting. I like good engineering so the thought of goop holding things together isn't particularly appealing. However the shower elbow is a parallel thread so I am going to need some kind of fibre washer or preferably an o-ring against the stop of bulkhead style fitting. the o-ring should give me more adjustment on the elbow so that its outlet points downward.

It's the adjustment of the 'bulkhead style fitting' from the elbow that is causing me concern. I am tempted to construct this fitting using a running BSP parallel with a backnut to form the flange, but even with the o-ring fitted this thread won't be a seal unless I fill it with goop. The backnut would give me the adjustment I need though, even AFTER the tiles are fitted.
